Church History
Greenwood Baptist Church was started in 1976. Although James Boling had only visited Greenwood, SC once, he moved his family (wife Pam and
two children) here to obey God’s calling to plant this church. The Greenwood Baptist Church held its first meeting on July 25 in the Alcoholics Anonymous building on the corner of Henrietta Ave and Brice St (just off Grace St). That building was loaned to the church to meet on Sundays and Wednesdays rent free. The only requirement was that they set up for the AA meetings after each church service.

In November 1976 they were able to rent a building located on Highway 25 South (across from the Drive-In Theater), formerly used as a bar. The infant church held its Charter Service on December 19, 1976 with 27 members.
In 1977, the church purchased 15.8 acres on Deadfall Road and began building their permanent meeting place. Greenwood residents bought $110,000 worth of bonds to help the young church pay for this new construction. That building was completed and the church held its first service there on Mother’s Day in 1979.
In 1991, Greenwood Baptist Church graded the northern end of its property to make way for a new gymnasium and ball field. By God’s grace and the faithfulness of His people, Greenwood Baptist Church was able to hold a mortgage burning service in 2004.
On July 27, 2014, Pastor James Boling retired after 38 years of faithful ministry, leaving and example of sacrifice and love that was used by God to gather a special people for His glory in the Greenwood area.

On May 29, 2016, the church called Matt Davis to be her second pastor. You can read more about Pastor Matt here.
