History

Greenwood Baptist Church was planted in 1976. Although James Boling had only briefly driven through Greenwood, SC, he moved here with his family to obey his calling to plant this church. After two months of knocking on doors to meet the residents, the Greenwood Baptist Church started meeting the last Sunday of July in the Alcoholics Anonymous building on the corner of Henrietta and Brice (next to the former Old Northside Apartments). That building was loaned to the church to meet on Sundays adn Wednesdays rent free. The only requirement was that they set up for the AA meetings after each church service.

The infant church was thankful for the free meeting place, but desired a building they could call their own. Providentially, they were able to rent a building formerly used as a beer joint located on Highway 25 South (across from the old Drive-In Theatre). Imagin the transformation - multiple coats of white paint over black, patched up bullet holes and the preaching of the gospel instead of cursing, drinking and fighting.

God was working in the hearts and the church was growing. By December, the church chartered with 27 members. In 1977, the church purchased 15.3 acres on Deadfall Road and began building their permanent meeting place. Greenwood residents bought $110,000 worth of bonds to help the young church pay for this new construction. That building was completed and the church held its first service there on Mother's Day in 1978. What an exciting beginning - praise God for His faithfulness!

Desiring to expand its realm of ministry, Greenwood Baptist Church built a gymnasium in 1991. This added classroom space and a permanent home for our midweek children's program. With the bond program paid off, the church borrowed the money to build this building. By God's grace and the faithfulness of His people, Greenwood Baptist Church was able to hold a mortgage burning service in 2004.
